Easy Way To Convert Ethanol To Butyne?

Spread the love

How do you convert ethanol to butyne?

Ethanol contains alcohol group which is to be converted first into an halide (say Cl), and then the ethyl chloride reacts with sodium acetylide to form the desired product.

What is ethanol?

Ethanol is an organic compound containing alcohol functional group having molecular formula C2H5OH.

How the reaction proceed?

Ethanol (C2H5OH) reacts with SOCl2 to form ethyl chloride (C2H5Cl).

Ethyl chloride (C2H5Cl), then, reacts with sodium acetylide (HC≡CNa) to form Butyne or 1-Butyne (C2H5C≡CNa).
